New Adventure - Ubuntu Linux and Open Source Software

8/29/2009:  I have decided to install Ubuntu Linux 9.04 onto my old Dell Inspiron 5000e laptop.  I am creating this blog entry as the ubuntu .iso file is downloading.

Ubuntu recommended InfraRecorder (a free CD/DVD burning application for windows) to write the .iso file onto a CD. I have downloaded it and will install after posting this blog entry.  InfraRecorder directed me to Uberdownloads for the software download.  This site has a lot of "free" applications available for download.  The files are listed as "Free Open Source". They only up front cost is time, an internet connection and hard drive space.  Although I have to say, as a natural skeptic, that "open source" and "free" are a bit scary to me.  I'm going on faith that this install will not bring with it a horrible Trojan that compromises my entire network and all of my data.  I guess that worries are also "free".

I'll keep updating this post as the install continues in my spare time.

Atomic Structure Timeline

Have you ever wondered-

How did people determine the structure of an atom- A particle that, to this day, has never been seen? How can we be certain that the actual structure of an atom matches the current scientific model?

This site explores discoveries related to atomic structure including the electron, proton and neutron.

http://www.atomictimeline.net/

It is interesting that, according to this timeline, major individual discoveries seem to have peaked in the 1940's and 1950's. There are many physicists in the world today and many new theories have been proposed. But where are the new discoveries?

Chris Markowski

Chris Markowski guest hosted Michael Savage's "Savage Nation" Wednesday night. He did a good job. I've subscribed to his podcast. Here's his web site: http://www.watchdogonwallstreet.com/

One of Markowski's pearls of wisdom from the show: "Everything in life that has meaning, value and worth involves work, time and effort."

Here's another one from his web site: “The second oldest profession in the world is the get-rich-quick-artist.”

Check out his "about page"to learn more.

Mother Teresa Quote- Take a minute and think about it.

"The greatest destroyer of peace is abortion because if a mother can kill her own child, what is left for me to kill you and you to kill me? There is nothing between." - Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta

If we can hold to a lie - that abortion is ok - then we are capable of all manner of evil. It is as simple as that.

Congressman Gene Taylor- D. Mississippi

I watched a town hall meeting on C-SPAN last night.

It was amazing to see that at least one Democrat appears to be on the right side of the issues.

God, Guns, Guts and American Pickup Trucks

I received this in an email this morning:

Any of you need a new truck or assault weapon?? I liked the fact that the car salesman kept his cool with the CNN anchor and he didn't come off looking like a snaggle-toothed, red neck, gun toting hillbilly- as the anchor's questioning implied.

READ THE HEALTH BILL- It is clearly set up to ration care.

Here's the bill: Full Text See evaluation below.

See pages 284-288, SEC. 1151. REDUCING POTENTIALLY PREVENTABLE HOSPITAL READMISSIONS:
(ii) EXCLUSION OF CERTAIN READMISSIONS.—For purposes of clause (i), with respect to a hospital, excess readmissions shall not include readmissions for an applicable condition for which there are fewer than a minimum number (as determined by the Secretary) of discharges for such applicable condition for the applicable period and such hospital.
and, under “Definitions”:
‘‘(A) APPLICABLE CONDITION.—The term ‘applicable condition’ means, subject to subparagraph (B), a condition or procedure selected by the Secretary . . .
and:
‘‘(E) READMISSION.—The term ‘readmission’ means, in the case of an individual who is discharged from an applicable hospital, the admission of the individual to the same or another applicable hospital within a time period specified by the Secretary from the date of such discharge.
and:
‘‘(6) LIMITATIONS ON REVIEW.—There shall be no administrative or judicial review under section 1869, section 1878, or otherwise of— . . .
‘‘(C) the measures of readmissions . . .

EVALUATION OF THE PASSAGES:

1. This section amends the Social Security Act
2. The government has the power to determine what constitutes an “applicable [medical] condition.”
3. The government has the power to determine who is allowed readmission into a hospital.
4. This determination will be made by statistics: when enough people have been discharged for the same condition, an individual may be readmitted.
5. This is government rationing, pure, simple, and straight up.
6. There can be no judicial review of decisions made here. The Secretary is above the courts.
7. The plan also allows the government to prohibit hospitals from expanding without federal permission: page 317-318.

The source of this evaluation and more information can be found here: http://www.classicalideals.com/HR3200.htm

Plain and simple, Americans don't need this bill and it should not be signed into law- Doing nothing is always an option. In this case, it is the option that I clearly prefer.
